Dr. Daniel Resnick was just elected Secretary of the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS). The ABNS is the regulatory body which determines the criteria necessary for being a neurosurgeon in the United States. The ABNS works with the ACGME via the Neurosurgical Residency Review Committee to establish the criteria necessary to complete a residency program. The ABNS creates and administers the written examination which every neurosurgery resident must pass prior to chief year, creates and administers the oral examination which every neurosurgeon must pass in order to have board certification, and has created a continuous certification program designed to keep practicing neurosurgeons up to date and safe in general practice. The ABNS is made up of 12 directors who serve staggered six year terms and an executive officer.
Dr. Resnick has been a director of the ABNS for three years and has spent the last two years as chairman of the written examination committee. He was recently elected Secretary. The Secretary is the primary spokesperson for the ABNS and has important liaison roles with the ACGME, ABMS, RRC, SNS, and the AANS/CNS Washington Committee. It is an important job and it is his honor to serve.
