The Department of Neurological Surgery’s Cerebrovascular Team is an integral part of the multidisciplinary stroke program at the University of Wisconsin. The primary neurosurgeons within this group are Drs. Robert Dempsey, Azam Ahmed, Mustafa Baskaya and David Niemann. In addition to outstanding open surgical treatments, an integral feature of our cerebrovascular unit is our combined neurosurgery/neuroradiology/endovascular team. This group has been responsible for innovative care in endovascular treatment of aneurysms, intracranial thromboysis, and stenting and innovative embolization with liquid embolic agents. In addition, our basic science research has extensive labs committed to the study of ischemic brain edema, cell membrane response to ischemia, lipid strategies in ischemic repair, neurogenesis and the re-establishment of function after stroke and innovative predictors of symptomatology in stherogenesis. Our educational components have established our skull-based laboratory for the development of improved open, endovascular and endoscopic approaches to a wide variety of cerebrovascular issues.
